In this investigation there are five types of observations for which you can enter data: (1) weather station readings, (2) wind speed and direction using a flagpole observation, (3) cloud observations, (4) snow depth, and (5) hail observations. OUR WEATHER STATION READINGS
In this section you can record the weather variations at your location. Just enter the observations from your weather station at the same time every day. All our measurements are in METRIC, so you may need to change your weather station to display metric measurements.
FLAGPOLE OBSERVATIONS
Record the wind in your location using a photograph and/or video, and making an estimate using the NOAA Beaufort Wind Chart.
- Take a photograph or video of a flag flying while you are facing north.
- Select the direction from which the wind is blowing by facing into the wind and estimating the compass direction you are facing. Use a real compass or compass app to help you.
- Use the Beaufort Wind Scale (http://tinyurl.com/ltt8h6) to estimate the number of the scale.
- You can also add some ‘field notes’ about your observations.
CLOUD PHOTO
Take a picture of the clouds. Decide what types of clouds you are seeing using the S’Cool Cloud Identification Chart (http://tinyurl.com/zuedt2y). Add some field notes about your observation.
SNOW DEPTH
Snow depth will need to be measured with a ruler, in centimeters, in the same location each time. Select an open space away from fences, walls, buildings or other obstructions. (School fields are a great place for these measurements!) Add a picture and field notes of your observation, if you like.
HAIL PHOTO
Upload 1-3 photos of the hail event, and add some field notes of your observations.
